People & Culture Manager

Job Description

The People & Culture Manager plays a key role in creating a connected, consistent employee experience across the UK.

Owning the operational delivery of the employee lifecycle, you'll drive continuous improvement across people processes, systems and initiatives that attract, develop and retain great talent.

As a trusted advisor to managers and employees, you'll provide practical, commercially focused guidance while helping build high-performing, inclusive teams. Alongside day-to-day operations, you'll contribute to delivering the UK People & Culture plan and broader international priorities, working closely with the EVP, Head of International P&C.

 

Responsibilities:

Delivery and Design of People Initiatives

  • Implement annual people plan initiatives, aligned to UK business and International P&C strategy.
  • Design clear and compelling communications to promote initiatives and increase engagement.
  • Manage participation in our annual best workplace programmes (GPTW & Campaign Best Workplaces), analysing feedback and working with the business to translate into action.

 Management of the Employee Lifecycle

  • Own and deliver People & Culture operations across the UK employee lifecycle.
  • As the P&C subject matter expert, create, guide and support communications and employee touchpoints.
  • Drive continuous improvement of employee lifecycle processes, increasing efficiency, automation through effective use of our new HRIS.
  • Maintain accurate employee data and reporting, using insights to inform decision-making. 

Learning & Development

  • Create, source, plan, and coordinate annual training plans (internal and external) within UK training budget, to instil a growth mindset culture and continually develop high-performing teams.
  • Identify ongoing needs and key learning themes via review processes, company meetings and team updates to coordinate internal Bitesize Barter training sessions.
  • Contribute to the build of development / goal setting processes, monitoring UK adoption to identify and unlock employee potential.
  • Inspire, coach and mentor to promote team and self-development.

  Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Build on and develop recruitment best practice with clear consideration for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging – including drafting JDs, screening candidates, conducting interviews, and onboarding new hires.
  • Train and coach managers on recruitment best practice, supporting upskilling and effective decision-making.
  • Liaise and onboard recruitment partners in alignment with Active’s inclusive Recruitment Manifesto.
  • Deliver a best-in-class onboarding experience for new hires and support managers in delivering a smooth and welcoming induction and probation, in line with company values.

Events, Culture & Wellbeing

  • Take a leading role in the UK Events and Culture Committee, promoting and leading initiatives with a focus on wellbeing and inclusion.
  • Partner with Mental Health First Aiders to support better mental wellbeing across the teams.
  • Manage annual wellbeing budget and approvals to embed initiatives with maximum participation.
  • Coordinate charity partner and work experience initiatives as required.
  • Continually review and improve people practices with particular focus on diversity, inclusion and belonging.  

Compensation, Benefits & Payroll

  • Lead overall benefit programmes including continual review of our benefits and provider renewals.
  • Manage and administer joiners, changes and leavers to all health and life benefit programmes throughout the year and as required, ensuring all data is accurate.
  • Manage pension auto-enrollment requirements ensuring compliance with The Pensions Regulator.
  • Work alongside Finance to process monthly payroll, ensuring accurate information and policies are maintained in the HRIS, and ad hoc processes are accurate.
  • Coordinate annual UK salary review process and gather relevant benchmarking, where appropriate. 

Employee Relations

  • Continually review and update employee handbooks, contracts, policies and procedures in line with changing legislation, inclusive practices and business need.
  • Provide clear, pragmatic advice on employee relations, performance and policy.
  • Coach and support people managers to lead and manage effectively, offering ongoing training and assistance to enhance their skills and develop their team performance.
  • Monitor people data and trends (e.g. absence, engagement), guiding managers to appropriate action.

 General

  • Lead in sharing relevant P&C updates, initiatives and information of note at monthly company meetings.
  • Design appropriate communication strategies alongside the business, where appropriate.
  • Complete monthly reporting as required within team, for finance and for global.
  • Oversee Health & Safety requirements and initiatives working alongside the Office Manager/EA.
  • Support ad hoc projects and evolving business needs, including involvement in broader European P&C activity.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to you from time to time.

You will bring:

  • Strong P&C/HR generalist experience with sound knowledge of UK employment law.
  • Experience managing the full employee lifecycle in a hands-on role.
  • Comfortable operating with autonomy; experience in a standalone role is beneficial.
  • Confident advising and influencing at different levels.
  • Strong operational focus, with attention to detail and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Experience improving processes and leveraging systems to drive efficiency and scale.
  • Able to balance day-to-day delivery with project-based work and initiatives.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Exposure to International or European P&C/HR environments is a plus.

What you'll earn (you won't find "competitive salary” written instead of a figure on our watch!)

£50,000 - £60,000
